この写真は、昨年入院した病院のリハビリテーション科の入り口の横の壁に、掲出されていた「詩」です。退院間もない時に、撮影したものです。ニューヨーク大学の壁に掲げられていて、１５０年ほど前に、南北戦争に従軍した南軍の兵士が記したものと言われていて、匿名の詩です。「悩める人々への銘」と翻訳されています。英語の原文は、下記の通りです。
I asked God for strengh, that I might achieve
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey…
I asked for health, that I might do greater things
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things…
I asked for riches,that I might be happy
I was given poverty, that I might be wise…
I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God…
I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things…
I got nothing that I asked for-but everythingI had
hoped for
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am among all men, most richly blessed

きっと多くの病人や、人生の苦悩に直面した人に、生きて行く勇気を与えたことでしょう。私のリハビリを担当してくださった療法士の皆さんが、患者さんたちを激励しようとしていたのでしょう。回復が遅くて悩んでいた方たちもおいででしたから、この祝福は助けになったのでしょう。
